Lewes Football Club was formed following a meeting of Lewes Priory Cricket Club at The Royal Oak pub on 23 September 1885. The brand new Women’s team was started by Jacquie Agnew for the 2002/3 season with the support of then club Chairman Terry Parris. The team underwent a dramatic rise form park football to the Women’s Combination, thanks to added support from local businessman Ron Moore. Lewes FC is a 100% fan owned club and the first gender equal club in the world! In 2017, they equalised the playing budgets and resources they allocate to their men’s and women’s teams. This was when equality FC was born. Same budgets, same marketing, same facilities, same stadium. Few football clubs in the UK, let alone Europe, can boast of playing at the same venue for over 135 years as Lewes Football Club can!

Football Mania Live are proud to be part of this historic event with Lewes FC who are the first gender equal club in the world!

'Different Works' - Here's how they did it... In 2017, Lewes equalised the playing budgets and resources they allocate to their men’s and women’s teams. Equality FC was born. Same budgets, same marketing, same facilities, same stadium, you get the idea. And it feels really good. And guess what? Since making this move, their attendances have increased, Owner numbers have increased, sponsorships have increased and media coverage has sky-rocketed. Turns out that ‘different’ works. And this kind of different will work in other clubs and other industries.

That’s the power of equality.
